Product Description
Rick Latham's first drum book, Advanced Funk Studies, is one of the definitive books for the contemporary drummer. Now again available, in a new edition that includes a two-CD set, this standard in the field is a compilation of all the drumming techniques used in Funk and Fusion Music.

The book includes transcriptions by the author of excerpts from many celebrated recordings by drummers such as Steve Gladd, David Garibaldi, Harvey Mason, Peter Erskine and many others, as well as specially constructed solos by the author. The two CD set contains recordings of all the patterns, transcriptions and solos as performed by author, Rick Latham. This is a book that belongs in the library of every contemporary drummer.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book   April 18, 2005

I have been working in this book for around a year. I started it to help me learn to read drum notation in a format that would not be boring. The book, and practice, have moved me to levels I could not imagine at the beginning of the journey. The other day I finally "heard" what I saw. Great book- get it.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and applicable   March 12, 2009

I am enjoying this book. It has some great 'meat and potatoes' hihat patterns. If anyone has played-even for quite a while- it is possible that you have overlooked something basic. The hats section is great for filling in the blanks. The funk patterns section is flat-out fun. You can't help but feel the attitude. The transcriptions section allows you a peek inside the brains of some of the greats: Steve Gadd, David Garibaldi, Harvey Mason, etc... There is also a solo section, which I haven't tackled yet, but looks to be challenging and entertaining. There are 2 cds included. Additionally, any creativity on your part in the way of stickings and voicing expands the possibilities exponentially. I believe that you will find that this is money well spent. Grab your sticks and enjoy!

Latham does a great job communicating the technique of funk drumming with the complete transcriptions. Not a beat is missed.

I enjoyed working with my conservatory graduated teacher on the solos in this book over several years.

I like the solos. It was hard to find a good book with drum solos plus extra and a CD.

Jack is such a good teacher because he always knows what I should work on next, and next is good. This book was his latest next suggestion for me, and he was right again. It's a big part of my practice day now, and there are pages and pages of funky fun to be had.
